Remember that song from Alice in wonderland?

“A very merry unbirthday to you.”

It seems like a silly song but I have been thinking about it a lot lately.

My dad would’ve been 69 tomorrow. But he won’t be.

Cancer took him from us right before his 66th birthday.

Compounded with Father’s Day right after.

My heart is heavy.

I want to wish him a happy birthday.

To sing to him. To laugh with him as he blows out his candles.

But instead it feels like a very unbirthday.

The date is now the opposite of counting how long he’s been alive.

There are no more candles to add to the cake.

A very merry unbirthday to my dad.
