Letter to my father

My father, my love.

I miss you. And I miss

the crinkles around your eyes, the loud bouts of laughter that were always so easy to come by.

Your jokes, although they were never very good.

When you came shopping only to sit in the car to listen to the game.

Your love for the Giants no matter how bad their season was.

the way you told stories, so big and so grand.

Arms up, smile glowing, laughter around the table.

Every thanksgiving a turkey fiasco. Brine on the counter. No laughter at the time, but lots days later.

I miss your quiet encouragement your unwavering loyalty.

You instilled my love of soccer and never missed a game. Our weekends in Vail with my soccer team, you were sometimes the only dad there but still you were there.

You’ll always be the first man I ever loved and my favorite person I ever met.

I look in the mirror,  my own face reflecting yours. My nose I once hated, too big I thought now reminds me of you, the one who gave it to me.

The should haves, would haves, could haves swirl around in the air, busy planes with nowhere to land.

How lucky I was to begin my life with you. How sad I am to not see another beach sunrise with you.

I loved you then, I love you now. I love you always.
